Overview
The Self-Regulating Sewage Pipe Heating Cable solves a specific winter failure: outdoor and unheated drainage lines that freeze solid, back up, and stop a building’s sewage system overnight. Ice blockages in sewage and storm pipes are messy to dig out and expensive to repair — this PTC trace heating cable wraps around the drain line, keeps it just above freezing, and runs untouched for the rest of the year.
Built around a self-regulating conductive core, the cable puts out more heat only where the pipe is coldest, which matters on long drainage runs that pass through buried, above-ground and interior sections at very different temperatures. It is part of our self-regulating heating cable family, and is sold factory-direct to municipalities, building managers, contractors and OEM drain-line equipment brands.

Key Features
- Self-regulating thermal response — each metre adjusts its output to the local pipe temperature; cold exposed sections work harder, buried sections idle.
- Chemical-resistant construction — a robust outer jacket resists the moisture and mild chemicals typical of drainage environments, so the cable survives long-term wet duty.
- High-performance FEP insulation — inner insulation rated to 200 °C on high-temperature builds, far outlasting general-purpose PVC jackets in outdoor use.
- Full armour shielding — aluminium foil plus tinned copper braid gives 100% earth continuity and mechanical abrasion protection against the pipe surface.
- Plug-and-play assembly — factory-pre-terminated with an industrial plug (120 V or 240 V), for fast deployment without field electrical work.
- Fit-and-forget maintenance — once wrapped and insulated, the system needs virtually no seasonal attention.

Available Options & Variants
Drain-line projects rarely need one cable size. Typical commercial orders combine a 30 W/m run on the exposed exterior segment, a 16 W/m run on the buried segment, and a contact thermostat at the coldest point. The cold-tail lead length and plug type are specified at order, and the same kit can be produced for the adjacent potable lines using our self-regulating water pipe heating cable — one supplier, one control logic for the whole plumbing envelope.
Applications
- Outdoor sewage and drain lines — freeze protection on gravity drainage between the building and the main sewer.
- Unheated basement drainage — keeps floor drains and sump discharge pipes flowing in cold plant rooms.
- Stormwater and roof drainage — prevents iced-up downpipe runs that overflow against the building wall.
- Municipal and commercial infrastructure — trace heating on drainage in loading yards, car parks and cold-storage buildings.
- Comparisons — for fire-service sprinkler mains see the self-regulating fire pipe heating cable; for fixed-wattage alternatives see our double-conductor fixed-resistance heating cable.
How Self-Regulating Works
A self-regulating cable contains a polymer heating matrix between two parallel bus wires. At low temperatures the matrix conducts well and the cable delivers its rated output; as local temperature rises, the polymer expands, conductive pathways break, resistance climbs, and the cable automatically reduces power at that exact spot. Because each centimetre of the core behaves independently, a long sewage run that passes from a warm basement out into a frozen yard never overheats the warm section or under-heats the cold one.
This independence is also what makes the product tolerant of bad installations: overlapped cable at a bend, cable tucked under insulation and cable rubbing against a pipe elbow all self-limit locally instead of building up heat. That is why drainage engineers trust PTC trace heating where maintenance access is awkward and a blocked pipe means a service call.
Installation Guide
- Dry the pipe surface, then fix the cable along the lower side of the drain line at the 4 or 8 o’clock position with aluminium tape every 30 cm.
- On long buried runs, fix the cable before backfilling and use a conduit entry where the run exits the ground.
- Spiral extra turns around inspection chambers, valves and clean-out tees, which lose heat fastest.
- Wrap the whole traced section in closed-cell pipe insulation rated for outdoor use; the cable should never heat the open air.
- Connect the pre-assembled plug to a weather-protected socket on a circuit with earth-leakage protection, controlled by a contact thermostat sensing the pipe.
- Commission in autumn before the first frost: measure insulation resistance, log the surface temperature, and label the circuit.
Safety & Certifications
Produced under an ISO 9001 quality system and certified CE and RoHS, the cable meets the safety codes expected on municipal and commercial building projects. The dual-layer shield gives continuous earth continuity for wet circuits, and the FEP inner insulation handles temperatures a PVC-jacketed cable would age out of within a few seasons. Like all outdoor trace circuits, the sewage pipe heat trace must be protected by local earth-leakage rules; the PTC self-limiting behaviour removes the over-temperature risk that external cut-outs are normally fitted to prevent.
Factory & Quality Control
SunAura has manufactured electric heating elements in Qingdao since 2008 and ships to more than 50 countries. Unlike mass exporters that buy cores from third parties and simply jacket them, we control the PTC core extrusion, braiding and testing in-house: every finished cable is resistance-measured, insulation-tested and visually inspected before packing. Batch records are retained, so when a property manager needs a replacement run ten years after installation, the spec matches the original build.
Packaging & Shipping
Each kit is coiled, desiccated and sealed in a moisture bag inside an export carton, with fixing tape, manual and declaration of conformity included. Standard lengths are ex-stock; custom wattages, lead lengths and plug types are produced to order. We ship by sea, air or express under EXW/FOB terms and can consolidate the kits, thermostats and junction boxes into one freight to keep project logistics simple.
OEM/ODM & Private Label
We support OEM programmes for drainage equipment brands, plumbing wholesalers and engineering contractors: custom cable lengths and wattages, private-label cartons and manuals, matched junction boxes, and element-only supply for integration into engineered freeze-protection packages. Engineering support is direct — our team sizes your drainage runs rather than selling a one-size kit.
Wholesale Pricing & How to Buy
Pricing is factory-direct wholesale with volume tiers for distributors, contractors and municipalities. MOQ is flexible and sample runs can be evaluated before a bulk order. Send us the pipe material and diameter, insulation thickness, minimum winter temperature, total run length and supply voltage; our engineers calculate the required wattage density and reply with a same-day quotation. Contact sales to start, or see the whole range on the products hub. Pair the cable with a smart thermostat for fully automatic winter operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cut the sewage heating cable to length on site?
Yes. The parallel PTC construction allows on-site cutting without changing output, which is why drainage crews trim the cable to each chamber and tee rather than ordering a perfect length. Fixed-resistance drain-line cable cannot be cut and must be ordered to length.
Will the jacket survive contact with wastewater moisture and chemicals?
The outer jacket is selected for moisture and typical drainage-chemical resistance, and the FEP inner insulation adds a second barrier. The cable is fixed to the outside of the pipe under insulation — it is not immersed inside the sewage flow.
How much wattage do I need for an outdoor drain line?
Insulated small-bore drainage usually runs at 16–30 W/m; exposed or thin-insulation lines in severe cold go to 45 W/m. Send us the pipe size, insulation and design temperature and we will size it.
Does this cable work for both sewage and stormwater pipes?
Yes — the same PTC element is used on sewage, grey-water, stormwater and sump discharge lines; only the wattage density and insulation choice change between applications.
Do you offer sample coils before a wholesale order?
Yes, sample lengths are available for bench and on-site evaluation, with current sample terms provided by our sales team. Ask here with your voltage and application.
