Self-Regulating Water Pipe Heating Cable

Model: SA-SELF-REGULATING-HEATING-CABLE-WATE CE & RoHS Factory since 2008 OEM / ODM Welcome

Plug-and-play PTC self-regulating water pipe heating cable that keeps potable lines on copper, steel, PVC and PEX flowing through the coldest winters.

Overview

The Self-Regulating Water Pipe Heating Cable is a plug-and-play PTC trace heating kit that keeps domestic and commercial potable water lines flowing through the coldest winters. Frozen water pipes paralyse a household or business, and burst pipes cause the kind of water damage that insurance never fully compensates for — this cable wraps around the supply line, trims its own heat as the pipe warms, and switches on automatically below the freezing mark.

The low-profile, flexible body bends easily around valves, faucets and tight corners in residential plumbing, while the FEP-rated insulation and full-metal shield give the long service life commercial buildings demand. It is part of our self-regulating heating cable range, sold factory-direct to contractors, wholesalers and OEM plumbing brands.

Key Features

  • Intelligent self-regulation — the heating core automatically puts out more heat only when the pipe gets colder, avoiding both freezing and energy waste.
  • Plug-and-play simplicity — pre-assembled with a heavy-duty industrial plug: wrap, insulate, plug in. No field electrical wiring.
  • Universal pipe compatibility — safe on copper, stainless steel, PVC and PEX plumbing, with overlap-safe self-limiting behaviour.
  • Premium FEP insulation — inner insulation rated to 200 °C, for thermal stability and a far longer life than standard PVC builds.
  • Full shielded construction — dual-conductor build with 100% coverage aluminium foil plus copper braid for earth continuity and abrasion protection.
  • Ultra-thin and flexible — the low-profile body follows valves, faucets and elbows that stiff cables cannot reach.

Available Options & Variants

Choose output density by pipe size and climate: 16 W/m for insulated indoor branches, 30 W/m for the typical residential or commercial supply line, 45 W/m for exposed exterior runs. The plug rating (120 V / 240 V) and cold-tail length are confirmed at order. Larger properties often run this cable on the potable mains together with our self-regulating sewage pipe heating cable on the drainage side, and the fire pipe version where a sprinkler riser shares the plant room.

Applications

  • Domestic water mains — freeze protection on cold-water supply lines in unheated spaces, lofts and garages.
  • Commercial plumbing — keeps backflow preventers, meter bypasses and booster-pipework live all winter.
  • Exterior hose bibs and wall hydrants — prevents the freeze-burst points around outside taps.
  • Seasonal properties — winterised cottages, chalets and holiday homes left heated to a frost setting.
  • Equipment protection — trace heating on filters and pressure tanks where standing water would split a housing.

How Self-Regulating Works

Two parallel bus wires feed a carbon-loaded polymer core. Cold conditions contract the polymer, keep the carbon pathways closed and the resistance low, so the cable radiates its rated watts per metre. As the pipe and surrounding air warm, the polymer expands, the pathways break, resistance rises, and the cable backs off the heat automatically. Because regulation happens at every point along the core, a pipe that passes from a warm cupboard into a cold cavity wall is heated correctly in both places — no hot spots, no dead spots.

The same self-limiting physics makes overlapping safe: a valve wrapped with extra cable cannot cook itself, which removes the external thermal cut-outs fixed-resistance systems depend on. Where a fully engineered, ordered-to-length run is preferred, buyers compare this PTC cable against our double-conductor fixed-resistance heating cable; the PTC version wins on flexibility, the fixed version on unit price for long, well-planned loops.

Installation Guide

  1. Plan the run: measure the pipe, valves, meter and exposed exterior section before choosing the kit length.
  2. Fix the cable at the 4 or 8 o’clock position of the pipe with aluminium fixing tape every 30 cm — never at the 6 o’clock lowest point.
  3. Spiral one or two extra turns around meters, valves and elbows, which lose heat fastest; overlapping is safe on PTC cable.
  4. Insulate the traced run fully before switching on; uninsulated trace heating works but reacts slowly and costs more.
  5. Plug into a weather-protected, earth-leakage-protected circuit controlled by a thermostat set just above freezing.
  6. Test insulation resistance after installation, label the circuit, and note the fitted length for future maintenance.

Safety & Certifications

Manufactured in an ISO 9001 facility, certified CE and RoHS, and compliant with the wiring-safety expectations of North American and European installations. The 100% foil-plus-braid shield gives continuous earth continuity for wet circuits, and the FEP inner insulation tolerates surface temperatures a PVC jacket would embrittle at. Because the PTC core cannot overheat, the water pipe heating cable is safe on plastic plumbing where a fixed-wattage element would need careful temperature limiting. Outdoor and bathroom circuits still require the local earth-leakage protection.

Factory & Quality Control

Since 2008, SunAura has built heating elements in Qingdao for contractors and brands in more than 50 countries. Our edge over volume exporters is engineering agility: direct technical support for your pipe layout, in-house PTC core extrusion, 100% finished-cable resistance and insulation testing, and retained batch records so replacements match the original. We size runs to your project rather than selling a generic kit.

Packaging & Shipping

Cables are coiled, sealed in a moisture-proof bag and packed in export cartons with fixing tape, instruction manual and CE/RoHS documents. Popular lengths ship from stock; custom voltages, lead lengths or private-label packaging are produced to order and shipped by sea, air or express under EXW/FOB terms. Thermostats and junction boxes can be consolidated into the same box to save freight.

OEM/ODM & Private Label

We supply element and kit programmes to plumbing wholesalers, appliance makers and property brands: custom lengths and wattages, pre-assembled plug options, private-label manuals and cartons, and matched controllers. Direct engineering support means your product range is sized for your market’s climates and pipe standards rather than resold as a generic import.

Wholesale Pricing & How to Buy

Wholesale price is factory-direct, with volume tiers for trade customers and OEM programmes. MOQ is flexible and sample lengths are available for evaluation. Send us the pipe diameter, insulation thickness, minimum winter temperature, total run length and supply voltage, and our engineers return a same-day quotation with the recommended wattage. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cut this self-regulating cable to length on site?

Yes. PTC self-regulating cable is parallel-constructed, so trimming it to the measured run does not change the wattage per metre. This is the biggest practical difference from fixed-resistance cable, which must be ordered to exact length.

Is it safe on PEX and PVC plastic pipe?

Yes. The self-limiting core cannot reach runaway temperatures even on overlapped sections, so plastic plumbing is protected without an external thermal cut-out. It is one of the reasons PTC trace heating is preferred on modern plastic piping.

Does the kit need an electrician to wire it?

No field termination is needed — the cable arrives pre-terminated with a heavy-duty plug. A qualified electrician should still confirm the earth-leakage protection and circuit rating for outdoor or wet installations.

How much will running it all winter cost?

The cable only works hard while the pipe is near freezing; once insulated and set on a frost thermostat, typical domestic trace heating costs a few tens of dollars per winter in most climates. The self-trimming behaviour is the main saving versus fixed-wattage elements.

Can I order custom-length kits for OEM resale?

Yes — custom lengths, wattages, plugs and private-label packaging are standard under our OEM/ODM programme. Sample kits are available first.
